BELTWAY BLOGROLL

The Downside Of Sharing A Famous Name

Most of the time, I don't mind sharing my name with the actor of "Lethal Weapon" fame.

Oh sure, I don't get many hits actually about me when I Google the name "Danny Glover," and I have to hear the same wisecracks almost every time I introduce myself, be it in person, by phone or by e-mail. But folks tend to remember me because of that shared name. Plus I have a few amusing stories to tell about people, including bloggers like Jeralyn Merritt of TalkLeft, who have mistakenly assumed that I was the actor. One man even chastised me by e-mail for misrepresenting myself because I used the name my parents have called me since birth!

But there is a downside to sharing a famous moniker: When my celebrity namesake is the subject of unflattering attention, I have to see my name linked with some rather harsh commentary. Like this: "fringe lunatics Danny Glover and Harry Belafonte."

I have a feeling I may be seeing more of that in coming days, now that the actor Danny Glover has appeared with Rep. Cynthia McKinney to defend her actions in one of the wackiest tales on Capitol Hill in a while. And I know for a fact that a whole bunch of bloggers are going to be associating my name with that story because the name was featured prominently in a blast e-mail from the office of a prominent House Republican to bloggers this afternoon.

The story I'm talking about is all over the news and the blogosphere at the moment. It involves an altercation between McKinney, D-Ga., and a Capitol Hill police officer. She allegedly bypassed a security checkpoint and then assaulted the officer after he first verbally and then physically tried to stop her.

McKinney initially issued a statement of regret for the "unfortunate confrontation." But this afternoon, in an appearance with her lawyer and actors Glover and Belafonte, McKinney's lawyer characterized the lawmaker as "a victim of being black while in Congress."

So I guess for a few days anyway, I'll just have to get used to bloggers saying things like "expressing solidary with violent 'progressives'" is what Danny Glover does best.

I commiserate with you.

Bearing the proud name Hooper, as in William Hooper, original signer of the Declaration of Independence, I should be proud of my family name. After all, hundreds of Hoopers fought, North AND South, to determine our national character, and I am honored by all these forebears, in wearing Hooper.

Then there's 'Ibrahim' Hooper, of C.A.I.R....

And my middle name, Dean, is STILL being abused by some screaming, angry Democrat somewhere...

Not to mention the damage done nationally to the otherwise-noble name Kerry...

So NOW you know why I post as Karridine! :D

And while we're on the subject, I MUCH prefer YOUR take on Danny Glover to Fringe Looney's version...

Karridine | 04.01.06 01:15 AM

At least you don't get mistaken for that guy who made "Passion of the Christ."

Mel Gibson | 04.01.06 10:05 AM

Several years ago a man with the same first, middle , and last name, and one year younger than my brother living in the same city was arrested for child rape. My father was minister of one of the largest churches in the city and so my brother's name was well known.

So your namesake could be much worse.

Ron W. | 04.01.06 10:27 AM

I too have a name known via stage and screen, and have pointed that out as a reason for blogging nicknonymously. I thought the travelling salesman who needed to make motel reservations as Bart Simpson had it bad till I saw Ron W's brother's story.

triticale | 04.01.06 10:41 AM

Tell me about it. My late namesake was the subject of Margaret Thatcher's notorious statement, "I don't know what I would do without Whitelaw. Everyone should have a Willy."

William Whitelaw | 04.01.06 11:17 AM

At least your name isn't Michael Bolton

Moonbat_One | 04.01.06 11:23 AM

Why not just use the name Daniel Glover? Also, maybe include your middle initial.

Eran | 04.01.06 12:57 PM

"At least your name isn't Michael Bolton"

Why should I change my name? He's the one who sucks.

God, I love that movie.

Ben | 04.01.06 12:57 PM

Why should I change my name? He's the one who sucks.

God, I love that movie.

Damn it feels good to be a gangsta!

mr lawson | 04.01.06 01:28 PM

I feel your pain. At least people don't hit you up for money because they think you wrote the music for "Star Wars".

john williams | 04.01.06 02:35 PM

Been there, got the T shirt.

One time in th 70's, I was at a dentist's office in Chicago and the nurse called my name. Two of us got up. I wondered for years if the other guy was a certain future senator.

Richard Durbin | 04.01.06 03:05 PM

Funny, I've never had this problem.

Philo Figglesworth | 04.01.06 03:26 PM

Just because I read this post, I will now think of YOU instead of that other guy when I read this name IF the story is good.

Kim | 04.01.06 08:22 PM

I share the same name with an NBA player. Good thing I included my middle initial in the blog's name. I hadn't heard of my namesake at the time I started blogging.

I should probably type some sort of disclaimer if I ever leave comments on Mark Cuban's blog.

Alan K. Henderson | 04.02.06 01:16 AM

There was a well-known musician and chorus leader in
television named Ray Charles, who became prominent in
the 1950s. When the piano-playing singer named Ray
Charles came along, and became so famous, the first
guy simply billed himself in TV credits as "the other
Ray Charles." You could do something similar.

At least you only have a name problem. I'm stopped
all the time and asked if I'm Dick Cheney.

William | 04.02.06 05:32 AM

You could always try growing up in the 70's with the name Billy Graham. No, I do not do sermons or crusades. These days, living in Florida I most often get asked if I'm related to our beloved Governor/Senator/workaholic, Bob. I suppose it's a step up.

Google also tells me that I've been a major player in NASA and noted adviser to Presidents Carter, Reagan, Bush, and Clinton on the matters of space and science. Somehow I also found time to promote a concert or two as well as Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show where I am credited with discovering Annie Oakley.

a different Bill | 04.02.06 10:09 AM

Dude, tell us what it was like working with Joe Pesci!

joey | 04.02.06 01:00 PM

I'm trying to get the Times-Picayune to do a study of how certain unfortunate women living here in New Orleans are dealing with the burden of bearing the name Katrina.

Steve T. | 04.02.06 03:21 PM

Look on the bright side - when Danny Glover embarrasses your good name it is at least limited to very few people. Everytime Cynthia McKinney's name appears in print, it carries the dreaded [D-GA] along with it, thereby casting aspersions upon an entire state.

Brian | 04.02.06 04:16 PM

It could be worse. A friend of mine is named Michael Tyson. As far as I know, he has never boxed a day in his life.

Juliette | 04.02.06 07:32 PM

Dyslexics think I'm rich.

Bates Gill | 04.03.06 09:12 AM

I am unGoogleable and I like it. Thank you Allman Brothers!
