The Blog Thorn In Mike Ferguson's Side

Back in February 2005, New Jersey resident Nathan Rudy decided to become an online thorn in the side of Rep. Mike Ferguson, the Republican representing the state's 7th District. That's when Rudy launched a blog called Dump Mike Ferguson.

The blog nearly accomplished its mission of helping boot Ferguson from office last year, as he narrowly defeated netroots favorite Linda Stender by a spread of less than 1.5 percent. He did not quite muster 50 percent of the vote a year ago.

Back in May, Stender committed to a 2008 rematch against Ferguson, and Dump Mike went silent about the same time. But now Dump Mike is winning kudos for its single-minded obsession with getting Ferguson out of office -- a goal achieved yesterday when the 37-year-old Ferguson announced that he will not seek re-election after just his fourth term in Congress.

"New Jersey has a well-developed and effective blogosphere," Matt Stoller, who blogged for the campaign of now-New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine, wrote at Open Left. Stoller added that "blogs like DumpMike.com just make it less fun to be a Republican official. And that's important since these Republicans play act as moderate in seats that should be held by progressive Democrats."
