The 'Omnibusters' Shed Light On Spending

First came the Porkbusters, the self-appointed militia of bloggers largely outside the Beltway who focused like a laser on the special-interest spending habits of members of Congress. Now their older establishment siblings, the "Omnibusters," are online at the Heritage Foundation.

In the Porkbusters tradition, Heritage this week launched an Omnibusting blog to pick apart every provision in this year's "omnibus appropriations bill." The massive measure would provide $517 billion for 14 federal departments and other agencies in fiscal 2008 because Congress has failed to pass the smaller, annual bills for the government.

Heritage wants to make sure the "pork" earmarked for projects backed by specific lawmakers, as well as other "budget gimmicks" and "policy riders," don't get lost in the omnibus shuffle. Along with the blog, the conservative think tank has created a searchable database of the legislation, which the House passed yesterday and the Senate is set to consider next.
